August Karkinen was inducted into the Army on June 13, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minn. 

He was a Private and served as a cannoneer with the Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 20th Coast Artillery, in the continental United States.

He was honorably discharged upon his request April 8, 1943 at Fort Crockett, Tex. to accept employment in war industry.
