PORFIRI, Armondo Thomas

Armando Thomas Porfiri was born on March 11th 1917 to Pasquale & Virginia [Cruciani] Porfiri in Buhl, Minnesota.

Mr Porfiri entered the U.S. Army on May 13th 1942 during WWII.

He transferred to Company C, 593rd Corps of Engineers landing craft and was trained on power boats and LCMs (landing craft medium). He rose to the rank of TEC4.

He says: "We embarked for the Pacific Theater from Camp Stoneman, California and landed on Goodenough Island in New Guinea and waited there for landing craft to be put together at Milne Bay. We were always attached to the Aussies. We unloaded cargo ships for the Australian army at Madang, New Guinea and moved up to Morati Island and part of the company made landings with the Navy on Borneo. I met my brother on Marati prior to going to Borneo. He was an officer on an LST.

"One night while we were tied up at our pier on Borneo near the Seabees (Navy Construction Battalions), the Japs came down from the hills and killed a few of the Seabees. A short time later, the headhunters did away with a few Japs -- cutting off their heads. When the war was over, we were transferred to the Philippines to await troop ships back to the States. I landed in the United States shortly before Christmas and discharged from the hospital at Camp McCoy on January 24th 1946."

After the war he returned home and married Marie Alberta [Fehrenbach] on September 3rd 1949 and they started a family.

Mr. Porfiri died on December 22nd 2007 at 90 years of age. He is buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
