STAUBER, Anthony Junior
Anthony Junior Stauber was born on May 11th 1928 Anthony Benjamin Joseph & Ellen [Landgren] Stauber in Duluth, Minnesota. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1946 and the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
Mr. Stauber enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 2nd 1946, at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota during WWII. Home at entry: Duluth.
He served as a military policeman with Headquarters Detachment at the Eighth Army Stockade, the former Nakano Prison near Tokyo. He rose to the rank of Corporal (CPL).
CPL Stauber shared the following: "The country was occupied by thousands of GIs and some who went outside the law ended up in the stockade. Our company ran the stockade, transported prisoners, and regularly conducted OFF LIMITS sweeps.
"The prisoners were all GIs, except for a few Chinese nationals. War criminals were detained elsewhere as were Japanese lawbreakers. The devastation I saw in Japan will be with me forever. Rebuilding had started and the Ernie Pyle theater was completed which we used when on leave.
"In late 1947, I was given two days rest and recreation to climb Mt. Fuji. There was a great deal of pride in just enlisting, not being drafted, and helping bring stability to an occupied country. Served under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur."
CPL Stauber was honorably discharged January 27th 1948; "with enough GI Bill to provide three years of college which I used to complete a four-year degree in 1951 at UMD."
He earned the following merits for his service:
- World War II Victory Medal, and
- Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).
"After my discharge, I joined the Army Reserve and completed my military career for 30 years. I served in a heavy weapons company, an Infantry battalion, floating craft depot maintenance company, and, in 1976, retired as Captain and commander of the 477th Medical company in Duluth, Minn."
After the war he returned home and married Margie Anne Nygaard in June 1949 and they started a family.
Mr. Stauber died August 14th 2015 at 87 years of age. He is buried at Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
