Title of article: “Duluth Tar Is Killed in Sea Battle”

“A Duluth sailor has been killed and three area men, including a Duluthian, are missing in action, according to official reports received last night.

“Kenneth MacDonald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm MacDonald, Duluth, Minnesota electrician’s mate 3-c, was killed in action, according to the navy department.

“Missing are:

"Lt. Alton C. Belanger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence A. Belanger, 1926 Greysolon road.

"S-Sgt Wilbur T. Haugen, son of Mrs. Luella M. Haugen, Staples, Minnesota.

"T-Sgt. Francis G. Bleyenberg, son of Mrs. Emma Bleyenberg, Superior, Wisconsin.

“Lieutenant Belanger is reported missing over Germany since February 24, the war department notified his parents. He was a member of the Eighth air force based in England and had piloted a Liberator bomber in at least a dozen missions over Nazi-controlled Europe. He had participated in the gigantic air assault against Germany Feb. 20. Events of that mission, in which he flew his battle-scarred plane back to its base after fighting off a horde of Nazi attackers were related by the Associated Press two days later.

“Belanger is a graduate of Central High School and Carleton college. He entered service two years ago and has been overseas since last September.”
