LEONE, Albert Nicholas
Albert Nicholas Leone was born on January 15th 1917 to Phillip & Maria Addolorata [Manocchio] Leone in Duluth, Minnesota.
Mr. Leone was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 25th 1942 during WWII. He was a a small arms weapons mechanic with the 735th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company in the 35th Infantry Division.
He served at Normandy (Omaha Beach D-plus-4), Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes (Battle of Bulge) and Central Europe. He rose to the rank of Technician Fourth Grade (TEC4).
TEC4 Leone received the Bronze Star Medal for devising bipod stock arrangement and carrying bale for 30-caliber weapon and 30-caliber Browning machine gun.
In part, the citation reads:
"These modifications proved so successful and in the hedgerow operations around St. Lo, that they have been accepted and extensively used by the Division. Corporal Leone's technical skill, ingenuity and zeal reflect credit upon his character as a soldier."
TEC4 Leone also earned the following merits for his service:
- Good Conduct Medal,
- European-African-Middle East Campaign Medal with 5 bronze battle stars,
- World War II Victory Medal, -and-
- two overseas service bars.
He was honorably discharged on September 16th 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After the was he returned home and married Laura Edna [Holum].
Mr. Leone died on June 9th 2009. He is buried at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery in Hermantown, Minnesota.
