Mr. Gronquist served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He enlisted on July 15, 1917, in Duluth, Minnesota, at age 23. After being discharged from the Army, Mr. Gronquist reenlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on May 21, 1920.

He was born in Lekoping, Sweden.
