STEVENS, Raymond John
Raymond John Stevens was born on August 11th 1943 to Dorothy June [Halverson] Goeppinger of Duluth Minnesota and Arthur L. Stevens of Milton, Vermont in Duluth, Minnesota. Raymond attended Duluth Central High School.
Mr. Stevens enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps on November 8th 1966 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His tour of service in Vietnam began on January 25th 1968. He served with "G" Company, 5th Marine Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He rose to the rank of Lance Corporal (LCPL)
CPL Stevens was killed during hostile action on October 9th 1968 while serving in the Quang Nam Provice in South Vietnam. He was his by an enemy mortar shell and was evacuated to the NSA Station Hospital in DaNang where he died later the same day from the shrapnel wounds.
He earned the following merits for his service:
- National Defence Service Medal,
- Vietnam Campaign Medal,
- Vietnam Service Medal, -and-
- a Purple Heart.
His remains were returned to his hometown of Duluth. He is buried at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery in Hermantown, Minnesota.
