Marcia Ness graduated from Virginia High School in Virginia, Minnesota. She also attended the Virginia Junior College before receiving a degree in English from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota in 1965.
She later received masters degrees in English and vocational rehabilitation. From 1965 to 1967 she was a teaching assistant at Marquette University in Milwaukee and at Loyola University in Chicago.
In 1967 and 1968 she worked as a recreation aide with the American Red Cross, including a one-year tour of duty in South Vietnam. She served at military bases, organizing recreation programs but also helping with various other chores such as handling mail or even assisting with food service.
Among the bases she served at were those in Pleiku and Cam Ranh Bay. After her Red Cross service, she worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in many cities.
