Berg was a Specialist E-5 with the 1st and 23rd infantry and the 1st and 33rd artillery during Vietnam. He served from April 1969 to October 1970 at the age of 18 or 19 years old. He was stationed in South Vietnam in Liekie Village and the city of Nutrang. He repaired radios on helicopters and field radios.
Berg received a:
Service Medal,
Good Conduct Medal, and the Bronze Star for his service.
On returning to the United States, Berg was sent to Oakland, California to help police officers deal with protesters.
