I attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) from 1969-1973 on an ROTC scholarship. I joined the Air Force ROTC program at UMD under the advice of my uncle, Lt. Col. Albert Amatuzio. I was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force in June 1973.
I served on active duty followed by duty in the Air Force Reserve from December 1973 until May 2006. During this time, I attended medical school at the University of Minnesota Medical School and residency at the University of California, San Diego.
I practiced Emergency Medicine in both the civilian and military hospitals until my retirement from the United States Air Force Reserve as a Colonel in May 2006.
