JOHNSON, Robert Merle "Bob"
Robert Merle "Bob" Johnson was born on March 20th 1931, the son of Rudolph Fredrick & Mildred [Selden] Johnson in Duluth, Minnesota. He graduated from high school in 1949.
Mr. Johnson served as a Private during the Korean War. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in April 1948. While on leave on April 28th 1951 he married married Virginia Elizabeth [Harkness].
PVT Johnson was assigned to Company F, 2nd Regiment, 5th Battalion, 1st Marine Division. His unit was sent to Korea, where they participated in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in North Korea.
After the war he returned home to Virginia and they started a family.
Mr. Johnson died on August 5th 2021 at 90 years of age. He is buried at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Saginaw, Minnesota near Duluth.

“Shipped out from Duluth in August 1950 with B Company Marine Reserve Unit. To Camp Pendleton, California. Shipped out to Japan, September 1950. Wonsan, Korea, October 1950. Patrolled mainly, ‘til we moved up to Kotori. Then to east side of reservoir: on outpost. Moved to Yudonwi 11/26. Point for 5th Marines. Attacked by many Chinese that night. Moved with 5th and 7th Marines to Hagaru-ri. Wounded in face by grenade 12/6/50 (East Hill). Purple Heart. Then to Kotori. Evacuated from Pusan to home.”
