Source: Veterans’ Memorial Hall veteran history form; veteran’s account follows:
“I was sent to Barstow, CA from San Diego. I was assigned to the base fire
department. After one week, I had a heavy-duty truck driver’s license to drive large equipment. At that time they assigned me to the lead truck, which the Asst. Chief rode with me. We were the ones who inspected the base facilities. We also were called to watch the bombs explode. Those duties included the secure area where live Uranium was stored. This was done on a weekly basis. I was transferred to Pendleton in late March for surgery on my hand that developed a cyst and partially paralyzed my hand. After getting out of the hospital I volunteered to go to Korea, but I was told “no.” I was then assigned to the main fire station as Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of the facility.”
