Egil Hoivik
Era: Korea
Military Branch: Army
Egil Hoivik of Duluth, Minnesota was inducted into the Army on Sept. 22, 1950, for service in the Korean War.
He served with the 71st Engineers Field Maintenance Company as part of the Fourth Army. The war in Korea had begun in June 1950 and Hoivik was among 37 local men who were inducted into the Army as military forces were built up for the war. About 100 Duluthians, including Mayor George W. Johnson, were on hand when the draftees left by bus for induction in Minneapolis. The mayor told them they were joining their fathers, grandfathers and uncles in "fighting for the winning side, the side of truth, honesty and peace -- the side which makes all human beings equal before the law."
Hoivik was discharged on Aug. 22, 1952.
