He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1930, the son of Charles and Charlotte Coit. He graduated from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1948.

Mr. Johnson died at age 77 in Duluth, Minnesota on February 23, 2008.
