The following was taken from an interview with Krystal Kunst, a student at Ordean Middle School.

James was in the Air Force just after the Korean War from 1954-1959. He was stationed in Kansas, Alaska. Part of his duties included spraying for mosquitoes with DDT and chloride and he was also in the Decontamination Unit.

His brothers Greg and Jeremy also joined the Air Force. When asked why he joined the Air Force he said, “I saw an Air Base in Duluth and liked their uniforms and decided that it would be neat to wear one of those some day.”
