CULVER, Joshua B.
Joshua B. Culver was born on September 12th 1828 to John & Mary [Sliter] Culver in Tompkins,New York. He moved out west by 1850 and lived in one of the town sites of Duluth prior to the Civil War. He helped organize, and subsequently enlisted, for service in the 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
Joshua was one of 18 locals of the St. Louis County area that served with the Union during the Civil War. Joshua mustered in as a 1st Lieutenant (1LT). and out as a Colonel (COL) in the Union Army. LT Culver initially enlisted with the Michigan 13th Infantry Regiment. He served in 'Companies "F" and 'S'.
The 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Kalamazoo, Michigan, and mustered into service for three years enlistment on January 17, 1862, under the command of Colonel Charles Edward Stuart. The 13th participated in several major battles including Shiloh, Corinth, Chickamaugua, Chattanooga and Sherman's March to the Sea.
After the war COL Culver married Sarah V. Woodman on June 4th 1850 and they started a family. Culver died on July 17th 1893 at 54 years of age in Buffalo, New York. He is buried Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth, Minnesota.
He is also featured on the SLCHS/VMH traveling exhibit, "The 18". The exhibit honors the 18 local Veterans known to have left everything to go off and fight for the Union in the Civil War. These 18 men, their characters forged in the rugged wilds of northern Minnesota, served the nation and helped build St. Louis County.
